In this video, we apply aerodynamic shape optimization using the adjoint technique to the Ahmed Body. This famous geometry was used to benchmark CFD codes, correlate to wind tunnel test data and so on for automotive related aerodynamics projects.

The method runs through a number of cycles, each containing:
- a primal run (normal CFD simulation of the aerodynamics)
- a dual run (adjoint simulation to link the drag reduction goal to the flow field)
- a sensitivity map calculation (to calculate how the surface should be morphed to reduce drag)
- a morphing step to implement these suggestions. The morphing is applied to the volume & surface mesh directly

We received an extremely precise 3D scan of the Tesla Cybertruck from A2MAC1: every single detail, inside and out, is in there. Air deflectors, windscreen wipers, underfloor & suspension covers, ... even the wiring is inside! So a massive thank you to them.

So this is a fantastic opportunity to study the Cybertruck aerodynamics in detail and see how realistic the claimed drag coefficient of 0.335 really is. Yes, that's still far larger than a sedan, and the CdA (taking the frontal area into account) is even larger! But given its edgy design, it's still an impressive feat.

In this video, we dive into the details of the air deflectors, the flow separation areas, the vortices around the A-pillar, the aerodynamic drag of the mirrors etc.

In this video is a step by step explanation of how to use CFD simulations to analyze the aerodynamics of an airplane. We used a public 3D model of a Cessna with some modifications (a custom propeller).

---Setup---
The AirShaper platform was used to set up the simulation. The airplane is positioned at zero angle of attack and a rotational speed has been added to the propellers.

---Results---
- Pressure clouds (iso-surface for the total pressure coefficient of 0):
These illustrate where energy losses are high. This highlights the drag caused by the landing gear, the support beams, gaps and hinges around the door, ... and of course the propeller itself.
- Pressure map: this one illustrates the pressure perpendicular to the surface. It clearly shows the suction & pressure side of the blades, the stagnation pressure on the wind screen, the performance of the main wing, ...
- Friction map: this one shows the magnitude of the friction force of the air flowing parallel to the surface. When low, this can indicate either stagnation of the flow (at the front wind screen, ...) or separation of the flow (behind the antennas, ...). The surface streamlines indicate how the air moves across the surface.
- 3D streamlines: these show how the air flows around the airframe, the support beams, through the propeller area, etc.
- Noise: this is an estimation of the sources of wind noise. As this is a steady stage RANS simulation, it is just an approximation based on the turbulent kinetic energy.
- Elements: the flow lines through the propellers are visualized. Also, the torque, power and thrust on the propellers can be analyzed by integrating the pressure & friction forces across their surface.
- Forces: the forces on each individual element are calculated.

- Pressure clouds (iso-surface for the total pressure coefficient of 0):
These illustrate where energy losses are high. This highlights the drag caused by the front suspension, mirrors, wind screen, rider, exposed wheels, the drivetrain, etc.
- Pressure map: this one illustrates the pressure perpendicular to the surface. It clearly shows the pressure buildup at the front and on the exposed front wheels. It also shows the pressure reduction in locations where the air speeds up to move around a curvature.
- Friction map: this one shows the magnitude of the friction force of the air flowing parallel to the surface. When low, this can indicate either stagnation of the flow (at the nose for example) or separation of the flow (on the back of the rider, just behind the wind screen, ...). The surface streamlines indicate how the air moves across the surface.
- 3D streamlines: these show how the air flows around the wind screen, in between the front wheel & the cover, ...
- Noise: this is an estimation of the sources of wind noise. As this is a steady stage RANS simulation, it is just an approximation based on the turbulent kinetic energy.
- Elements: the flow through the radiator is visualized and the total flow rate is calculated.
- Forces: the forces on each individual element are calculated.
